Overview

The POCUS for Family Medicine Online Course provides participants a strong foundation to perform and/or interpret all of the core ultrasound applications in an urban and rural family medicine setting as outlined in the AAFP, ACEP ultrasound practice guidelines. Objectives

  • Increase participant’s knowledge to better perform and/or interpret POCUS examinations.
  • Recognize the sonographic appearance of the normal uterus and ovaries as well as sonographic technique and appropriate documentation.
  • Increase the participant’s knowledge to better perform and/or interpret a limited POC 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester OB ultrasound examination.
  • Recall the basic scanning fundamentals when performing abdominal ultrasound examinations.
  • Recall the components and suggested order for the cardiac limited ultrasound exam.
  • Recognize the sonographic appearance of retained foreign bodies and fractures, bowel obstruction, appendicitis, hernia, testicular torsion, epididymitis/orchitis, varicocele, and hydrocele.
  • Recall the common POCUS applications when evaluating tendon injuries, bursitis, joint effusion, abscess, and the orbit.
  • Recall the views for the EFAST Exam.
  • Recognize the sonographic appearance of pneumothorax, consolidation, pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, ARDS, and the Blue protocol.
  • Recognize the sonographic appearance of deep vein thrombosis in lower extremities.
  • Identify common cardiac pathology seen in a POC setting.
  • Demonstrate image orientation, transducer preparation, and scan protocols for performing use of ultrasound guidance for central and peripheral vascular access, thoracentesis, paracentesis, and lumbar puncture
  • Increase competence to incorporate protocols, scan techniques, and interpretation criteria into clinical practice.
