Course Description
This live, 2-day Introduction to Peripheral Vascular Ultrasound hands-on course is the first step to obtain a strong foundation to begin performing and/or interpreting peripheral arterial and venous ultrasound examinations.  The Peripheral Vascular Ultrasound training program is taught by leading vascular ultrasound experts and includes lectures, interactive case presentations using an audience response system (ARS), and extensive hands-on training featuring a 3:1 ratio with live models for a realistic training experience.  Program topics include upper and lower extremity venous duplex/color flow imaging, lower extremity arterial duplex/color flow imaging, and lower extremity arterial physiologic testing (segmental pressures, ABIs and PVRs).   The Peripheral Vascular Ultrasound protocols are taught in accordance with AIUM and IAC guidelines and the Peripheral Vascular Ultrasound hands-on seminar incorporates the review of 65+ peripheral vascular ultrasound examinations.  The program also offers 16.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (also meets ARDMS and IAC CME requirements).  In addition, the Peripheral Vascular ultrasound hands-on workshop offers 15.0 ASRT Category A continuing education credits.  

This intensive hands-on peripheral vascular ultrasound program provides the training needed to immediately begin integrating the skills learned into clinical practice.

Objectives & Topics

Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

  1. Increase the participants’ knowledge to better perform and/or interpret upper and lower Peripheral Vascular ultrasound examinations.
  2. Apply knowledge of the anatomy/physiology of the upper & lower extremity venous and arterial systems into the venous & arterial duplex and physiologic testing examinations.
  3. Cite Doppler/color physics and be able to (sonographers) apply these principles to optimize system controls or (physicians) utilize this information for recognizing technical errors which may  result in misdiagnosis.
  4. Perform routine scan protocols, and document Doppler waveforms for lower extremity arterial and venous evaluations of the upper and lower extremity.
  5. Differentiate normal/abnormal imaging, spectral Doppler and color characteristics for identifying arterial and venous disease.
  6. State the indications and applications of indirect testing methods for lower arterial disease.
  7. Demonstrate vein mapping techniques to identify suitability as a potential arterial bypass graft.
  8. Increase confidence to incorporate protocols, techniques & interpretation criteria to improve diagnostic/treatment accuracy.

Target Audience/Course Pre-Requisites
Sonographers, physicians, physician assistants and other medical professionals learning how to perform and/or interpret peripheral vascular duplex/color examinations and physiologic arterial testing (proof of allied health experience required). Physician participants may include (but are not limited to) those involved with internal medicine, cardiology, radiology, general/vascular surgery, and primary care.
