Course Itinerary

OB/GYN Course Objectives:

At the completion of the program the participant should be able to:

1. Explain the basic fundamentals of U/S physics/instrumentation.
2. Describe routine scan protocols, and measurements for performing transabdominal GYN, endovaginal scanning, and obstetric applications.
3. Identify normal/abnormal img. characteristics of ovarian & uterine pathology.
4. Identify normal fetal anatomy, apply appropriate measurement techniques and discuss commonly seen fetal abnormalities.
5. Perform a biophysical profile examination.
6. State the indications and applications for performing fetal echo.
7. Explain fetal cardiac anatomy and physiology.
8. Identify ultrasound anatomy of the fetal heart.
9. Demonstrate a routine protocol for a fetal echocardiogram.
10. List standard 2D documentation included in a routine fetal heart ultrasound examination.
11. Describe commonly seen fetal heart pathology.
12. Increase knowledge and confidence to perform and/or interpret obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound examinations.
13. Apply the information discussed in a clinical setting, under supervised conditions until an accepted level of proficiency has been attained.

  • The "Extended Basic" cardiac ultrasound exam: identifying outflow tracts / Great vessels (arch and ductus) etc.
  • Hands-on training sessions

Who Can Attend?

Sonographers and other medical professionals involved in performing OB-GYN ultrasound examinations; Physicians at an entry level of interpreting/performing OB-GYN exams. Physician participants may include (but are not limited to) those involved with: OB-GYN, endocrinologists involved in performing GYN examinations, family practice, and emergency medicine. Nurse practitioners and midwives may also attend.

Special Lecture: Genetic Screening by Ultrasound in the 1st and 2nd Trimesters

This lecture will utilize text, diagrams, 2-D images and real-time clips to present an overview of current labs and sonographic protocols for the screening of genetic abnormalities.  A list of the most common ultrasound findings/markers associated with the most common genetic syndromes will be presented.

Objectives:

At the completion of the program the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe timelines for screening in the 1st and 2nd Trimesters
  2. List components of normal and abnormal NT’s in the 1st Trimester
  3. Describe most common ultrasound “markers” with T-13, 18, 21 and Turners
  4. List pertinent labs utilized for genetic screening and their detection rates
  5. Describe protocol used for the systematic evaluation/screen for aneuploidy
