Target Audience

Anyone preparing to take the Breast Sonography Registry Board Examination.

Objectives

Upon completion of these modules, you should be able to accomplish the following:

  1. INSTRUMENTATION AND TECHNIQUE FOR BREAST SONOGRAPHY
    • Discuss the basic properties of ultrasound,
    • Demonstrate the importance of correct equipment selection and setup,
    • Care for the transducer and equipment properly,
    • Perform basic Doppler exam on the breast,
    • Describe the basic sonographic terminology, and
    • Explain imaging parameters used during the examination
  2. NORMAL BREAST ANATOMY
    • Describe the embryologic development and congenital anomalies of the breast
    • Describe the ductal system, fibrous planes, and vascular, nerve and lymphatic supply for the breast
    • Identify the differences between normal mammographic and sonographic breast tissue
    • Compare the effects of pregnancy and involution in the breast
  3. DETECTABLE BREAST LESIONS
    • Compare the sonographic and mammographic appearance of lesions found in the breast
    • Describe the sonographic appearance of benign and malignant masses
  4. COMPLEMENTARY IMAGING
    • Contrast the use of various imaging modalities in detection of breast lesions
    • Identify the imaging of the breast after surgery to include augmentation, reduction, mammoplasty, and biopsy
  5. NON-SURGICAL BREAST BIOPSY
    • Demonstrate sterile technique
    • Identify the steps taken to perform a FNA, Mammotomy, core biopsy, and ABBI procedure
    • Optimize the sonographic image to visualize the biopsy needle
    • Determine which gauge needle would be used in each type of interventional procedure
    • Differentiate between a free-hand and guided biopsy
    • Discuss invasive procedure preparation and complications
    • Describe pre and post surgical imaging of the guide needle and specimen
